Island is an interesting island in Lake Lure and a
place with a unique story. Also called Pig
Island or Snake Island by some locals, Dr. Morse had
originally planned to build a Lake Lure Yacht Club
or other resort amusement on Lake Lure Yacht Island. Read more about the

Lure, a man-made lake, was once the site of a small
mountain town called Buffalo. It is here that the
story of the Lake Lure Yacht Island begins.
 When the town of Buffalo was being flooded to create
the lake, that area now known as Lake Lure Yacht
Island was a massive, 175 foot highland hill. While
the people of the town, gravesites, and most of the
buildings were evacuated, the animals that lived in
and around Buffalo were not, and as the lake’s level
grew, the animals scrambled to find higher ground.
Lake Lure Yacht Island was the highest ground not covered by the lake, and this is where most
of the animals that remained ended up. After the
lake was created, Dr. Morse toured Lake Lure and was
disgusted to find that the beautiful piece of
property that he had originally planned for a resort
amusement island, or Lake Lure Yacht Island, was now
a snake pit, as the population of land snakes had
migrated and found refuge on the island. To get rid
of the snakes a local farmer suggested to Morse that
he might try placing pigs on the island to keep the
snakes away. After some time had passed,
Morse returned to Lake Lure Yacht Island to find
that the snakes were now gone; this pleased him,
however he quickly realized that the population of
pigs on the island was exploding! Unfortunately, Dr.
Morse’s dreams of creating an amusement club on the
island never came to fruition.
Today, a small bridge is the only remnant of the
proposed development on Lake Lure Yacht Island,
however it is still a lovely part of the lake’s
