History of Lake Lure
The stunning crown
jewel of the Blue Ridge, beautiful
Lake Lure NC was
the vision and dream of Dr. Lucius B. Morse. Morse
came to the Hickory Nut Gorge area in the early part
of the 20th century because he believed the gorgeous
weather and climate would cure his poor health. He
quickly fell in love with Hickory Nut Gorge and
enlisted the help of his brothers for financial
backing on the purchase of 400 acres in and around
what is today Lake Lure. The lands around present
day Chimney Rock Park NC were included in this sale.
Later the investors would acquire more of the lands
to bring the total to more than 8,000 acres
around what was to become Lake Lure. How is that for
a Lake Lure Real Estate deal? Today, the Lake Lure
NC Land that the Morse family purchased would be
considered priceless.
Dr. Morse envisioned a mountain resort where people
would retreat to during the glorious summers that
the mountains offered. The area’s perfect climate
and beautiful scenery seemed ideal for a mountain
lake community, and the Rocky Broad River nearby
feeds the lake. In September of 1926, the damming of the Rocky
Broad River was completed, and in 1927 the full
impoundment of Lake Lure was completed. In 1928
power plant operations began under Blue Ridge Power
Company, which would later become Duke Power
Company, and in 1929 the plans for the Lake Lure
Development came to a halt due to our nation’s
struggling economy that was the start of the Great Depression.
During this time, the lake’s resort town experienced
a number of setbacks and was eventually
foreclosed in 1929. After a series of changes, it
came to be owned by Carolina Mountain Corporation, a
land company, until 1965 when the town of Lake Lure
acquired the lake and the lands surrounding.
After acquiring the lake, the town of Lake Lure
North Carolina sought to preserve the lands and
create a special place that would have made Dr.
Morse and his wife Elizabeth proud. After all, it
was Morse’s wife Elizabeth who gave the lake it’s
name, Lake Lure, after seeing the lands and calling
them stunning and alluring; a place people will want
to keep coming back to. The couple wanted to
create a special place where people
enjoyed timeless summers that they would never
forget, and it seemed now that vision was able to
come to fruition. Since that time, the town of Lake
Lure has maintained its stunning resort charm and
served as the set location for several major motion
pictures, including the lake resort in Dirty Dancing
and the majestic waterfall seen in The Last of the
Mohicans.
